Crossroads 5K and Family Fun Day
May 7, 2017

The Parent Advisory Group (PAG) organizes our annual Crossroads 5K and Family Fun Day. Many students families, staff, and community members participate by walking or running the 5K. The course itself makes its way throughout the quiet residential streets near the school, with the Natick Police monitoring the traffic to provide a safe route for runners. The race starts and ends just outside of Crossroads School and an official timing company provides runner numbers and race results.

Following the race, participants enjoy food and fun in our parking lot. Past events have included a DJ, a dunk tank, legos, games, bounce houses, the presentation of medals, and food trucks. It’s the generosity of the many people and organizations that support this event that greatly assist our ability to provide additional curriculums and programming for our students.

Special Olympics
June 7, 2017

In the spring, Crossroads participates in the Natick Special Olympic School Games at Natick High School. With the help of special education teachers throughout Natick, our students are paired with same age partners from the public schools. For a month prior to the event, our students travel to the Natick Public Schools to practice for their events alongside their partners. Om the day of the Special Olympics, our students join over 200 Special Olympics athletes to compete in races, relays, throwing, and long jump events. The games provide our students an opportunity to compete with their peers in a day of fun, excitement, and socialization.

Barbeques
Summer 2017

Crossroads has three barbeques throughout the summer to celebrate the season. All are on Fridays at the school, and feature burgers, hot dogs, many delicious sides, and drinks. One of the barbeques is reserved as “Family BBQ Day,” a day in which families are invited to come enjoy a nice summer lunch with their student. In addition to providing the classrooms the chance to enjoy each other’s company in the summer weather, the barbeque also provide students a chance to work on skills that come in handy during the summer months, like going through the buffet line, trying new foods, and attending a large gathering.

At the end of the summer, all of Crossroads climbs aboard vans and buses and take a ride to Hopkinton State Park. Students, staff, and families enjoy a day of swimming, games, and a BBQ lunch. Field Day is a fun event to celebrate the completion of the previous school year and all its successes, as well as a chance for everyone to look forward to the next school year.

Bike to the Beach
September 2, 2017

In 2015, Crossroads School became a beneficiary of the annual Bike to the Beach fundraiser. Bike to the Beach is a 501(c)(3) non-profit cycling organization that promotes cycling for fun and fitness while seeking to raise money and awareness for autism. The 100-mile ride from Boston, MA to Newport, RI is meant to excite, inspire, and motivate our community to bike, challenge themselves, and impact their community by raising funds and awareness for autism. We had a successful first year as a beneficiary of the Bike to the Beach event, and received nearly $30,000. Many of our families, students, and staff supported the event by signing up to ride, volunteering at a sponsored rest stop, and helping secure donations for Team Crossroads. Our second year was a huge success with more riders and continued support from the community.

Thanksgiving Feast
November 22, 2017

On the last day before Thanksgiving Break, Crossroads holds its annual Thanksgiving Feast in the school gym. This is a favorite event of many staff members and students alike. Before the Wednesday half-day, staff sign-up for food they will bring and the students use the opportunity to practice skills such as making shopping lists, purchasing ingredients, and following recipes. The students decorate the tables with handmade centerpieces, which are judged by a panel and prizes are awarded. The end result is a bountiful meal of delicious food prepared by staff and students. The feast is truly a nice way to gather together and express our thanks and appreciation for the uniqueness each person brings to the world.

#GivingTuesday
November 28, 2017

#GivingTuesday is a global day of philanthropic movement that began in 2012. In that year, and every year since, the first Monday following Thanksgiving marks #GivingTuesday (following Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday).

#GivingTuesday harnesses the power of social media and unites it with the power of generous people who are looking for a way to give back to their communities with donations of time, talent, and resources. At its core, #GivingTuesday is about the reciprocity that occurs in a community that produces mutual benefit and enrichment for all members.

Crossroads first participated in #GivingTuesday in December 2015. The school celebrates by collecting nonperishable food items and donating them to a local food pantry called A Place to Turn. The process is an important one because it engages all members of our community in the spirit of giving. Additionally, Crossroads holds an online #GivingTuesday fundraiser.
