Description

Education Program

Our educational program is individualized to meet each student's specific needs.  Utilizing the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks as a guide, Crossroads targets appropriate educational goals that are reflected on the student's IEP.  Skills are typically taught in the classroom then generalized throughout the school and community environments.

Speech Therapy

The goal of speech therapy is to provide students with the tools needed to effectively communicate.  Crossroads teaches communication skills through spoken language, picture communication, augmentative devices, sign language and gestures.

Physical Therapy

The goal of physical therapy is to help students build gross motor skills, muscle strength and coordination skills. These skills include running, skipping, kicking, climbing stairs, bike riding, throwing and catching. These skills are not only important for physical development, but for social engagement in sports, recess and general play. Physical therapy may be implemented in the classroom or in adaptive physical education classes.

Occupational Therapy

The goal of occupational therapy is to develop fine motor skills that allow a student to participate as appropriately and independently as possible in meaningful life activities. These skills include play skills, self help skills, leisure skills and writing skills.

Adaptive Physical Education (APE)

The goal of adapted physical education is to teach students cooperative physical sport games.  The classes include sports that teach sportmanship, cooperation and safe physical play. For example, sports like floor hockey and whiffle ball are adapted to be inclusive of all the children regardless of their ability level. The students participate in aquatic activities as well as Special Olympics.

Vocational Training

The goal of the vocational training program is to develop individual student's job skills, enabling students to successfully prepare for a job in the community.  These skills include interviewing skills, appropriate work behavior and etiquette, as well as the vocational skill itself.
