Planning and the Path to Success

Playground Campaign Overview| The Need | DonateThe Prozinski Family Sport Court is OPEN!

We began raising funds in November 2017 to design, plan, and execute the outdoor recreation space with the goal of having a fully built playground and landscaped recreation area completed by June 2019.  With the installation of the Prozinski Family Sport Court in September 2018 and the playground in November 2018, we are very close to achieving our goals!

A playground committee, chaired by Caroline Kalberer, Occupational Therapist, met monthly beginning in February 2018 to coordinate with vendors, review and approve the final site design, and evaluate playground and fitness equipment. The committee was made up of school staff representing all departments, as well as parents and community members to ensure the goals and needs of all current and future students are considered.  We even engaged our Sibling Camp to provide some expert playground insights!

On September 4, 2018, Crossroads Students enjoyed the Prozinski Family Sport Court for the first time!  The court was hopping from the first APE Class with Franklin Road through many lunches and APE Classes!  We are so grateful to all of our donors, and especially the Prozinski Family for helping us to complete Phase 1 of our Outdoor Spaces Campaign!

In September 2018, shortly after the opening of the Prozinski Family Sport Court, newly appointed Crossroads Trustee, Annette Hines and the Special Needs Law Group pledged to match $10,000 in donations to the campaign to help us close the gap and ensure we would be installing our playground in the fall. The Special Needs Law Group fully embraced the spirit of play and had a fun time promoting the campaign, which included a trip to a local playground!

Thanks to the success of the match, we ordered the playground equipment and scheduled installation for November 8-10. Of course, Mother Nature threw a few challenges at us with freezing temperatures, torrential rain, local flooding, and then a foot of snow, but our staff and volunteers persevered in order to build our students this awesome playground. (Of course, it did require that we rent a tent and heaters, which impacted our budget.)

Students played on the playground for the first time on #GivingTuesday, exactly one year following the start of the fundraising campaign. We’re all looking forward to completing the rubber surfacing and celebrating with an official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in late Spring 2019.

We raised more than $200,000 and need another $17,000 for landscaping, a shed to store sports equipment, and to complete the rubber surfacing.
